Situated in the London borough of Redbridge, the district of Ilford lies to the north east of the capital, bisected by the River Roding and the North Circular road.
Once a small rural village in the county of Essex, Ilford expanded hugely during the nineteenth century as the railway into London brought heavy industry into the area. The district is primarily residential and is home, according to locals, to a disproportionately large number of the capital's black cab drivers, owing to its easy access to central London.
Ilford has a wide variety of popular bars and pubs to choose from, along with many fine restaurants offering cuisine from around the world, not to mention more traditional British fayre. The borough is also has many bustling shopping areas with all major high street names represented.
